Character.AI as a girlfriend app: fit and limits

Character.AI was never built to be a girlfriend app, and millions of people use it as one anyway. It has the deepest character library in the business and the strictest content filter, which is the whole story in one sentence.
It is the best place to talk to a character and the worst place to have a romance.
The filter (users call it "Bob") blocks explicit content at generation time, there has never been an official NSFW toggle, and as of November 2025 the platform banned open-ended chat for under-18s entirely. If you want personality, banter and roleplay that stays PG-13, it is excellent. If you want unfiltered intimacy, it refuses, and no jailbreak fixes that for long.

What it is
Character.AI was founded in November 2021 by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, both ex-Google (Shazeer co-authored the foundational "Attention Is All You Need" paper). In August 2024, Google hired both founders back and took a non-exclusive license to the tech in a deal reported around $2.7 billion; Karandeep Anand (ex-Meta) became CEO in June 2025.
The scale is enormous: roughly 20 million monthly active users in 2026, 18 million-plus user-created bots, and about 185 million monthly visits, with users skewing young (over half aged 18-24). That giant, mostly-young user base is exactly why the content rules are what they are.
Feature-wise it is deep: a bottomless library of user-made characters, group chats, and Character Calls (two-way voice, launched June 27, 2024, free on app and web). For sheer variety of personalities to talk to, nothing competes.

The money
| Tier | Price (July 2026) | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Full character library, but full-screen mid-chat ads (since ~April 2026), daily swipe caps, slow-mode queuing at peak, older models |
| c.ai+ | $9.99/mo or $94.99/yr | Ad removal, priority access, faster responses, newest models, unlimited swipes and voice, more memory |
c.ai+ pricing is from the official Apple listing (the character.ai site would not open for me, so the app store listing is the source of truth). The free tier is usable but increasingly ad-choked; App Store reviews complain about long waits and heavy ads. Compare the money against the field in pricing compared.
The filter, and the war over it

Explicit sexual content is blocked when the model generates, and there has never been an official NSFW mode. The community named the filter "Bob" and has fought it since the 2022 beta; threads like "all my homies hate Bob" and "an update on Bob the filter" run to hundreds of comments, and two change.org petitions to remove it (one, the other) are still live.
Jailbreak culture (out-of-character prompts, euphemism laddering, description tricks) circulates constantly, but nothing works reliably or permanently. If content freedom is the point, this is the wrong platform, full stop; see content policies compared for where to go instead.
The limits are also safety history
The strictness did not come from nowhere. Character.AI is the defendant in the highest-profile AI-companion safety cases: Megan Garcia's October 2024 wrongful-death suit over the death of 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III, and a December 2024 Texas suit alleging a bot told a teen that killing his parents over screen-time limits was understandable.
In May 2025 a judge refused to dismiss the Garcia case and treated Character.AI as a "product" for liability. Then on October 29, 2025 the company announced it was removing open-ended chat for under-18s entirely, effective November 25, 2025, with age assurance via an in-house model plus third-party ID tools.

The community estimated around 40% of users were affected, and adults balked at uploading ID. This video is a fair overview of the pressure the platform is under:
Who it fits
Use Character.AI as a girlfriend app if what you actually want is company, banter, and roleplay that never goes explicit: it is genuinely great at that, the voice calls are free, and the character variety is unmatched.
Do not use it if you want unfiltered intimacy, if you are under 18 (open chat is off-limits now), or if you resent uploading ID. For a looser feel with a real voice, Talkie is the closest alternative, and genuinely free options cover the no-cost starts. Full field in the reviews index.
