Talkie review

Talkie review

Talkie is one of the most-downloaded companion apps on earth, and one of the most volatile. Great voice, a huge character library, a genuinely fun creation tool, all wrapped around a gacha economy and a moderation policy that bans people mid-relationship.

It is built by MiniMax in China, and the money model quietly drains a gems currency as you chat. There is no official NSFW mode. Moderation is aggressive enough that a 2026 review was titled around the bans, and the app has already been pulled from the US App Store once.

Fun to play, risky to fall in love with. Try the free tier, and do not stockpile gems.

Who makes it, and the lineage that matters

Talkie's App Store seller is SUBSUP PTE. LTD. in Singapore, an overseas vehicle of MiniMax, the Shanghai AI company founded in December 2021 that IPO'd on the Hong Kong exchange on January 9, 2026. The lineage is worth knowing because it tells you where the content rules come from.

Talkie's predecessor "Glow" launched in China in October 2022, hit 5 million users in four months, and was removed from Chinese app stores in 2023 amid speculation over sexually explicit content. Its current Chinese sister app, Xingye, runs under China's content regulator, which is stricter than international Talkie.

So Talkie sits in a permanent tension between a global audience that wants romance and a corporate parent that has already been burned by content once.

It launched internationally in June 2023 (the official site is talkie-ai.com, "Powered by MiniMax") and hit roughly 11 million monthly active users by July 2024, with signature celebrity-persona bots (Trump, Swift, Musk, LeBron) as a hook. Google Play shows the app (package com.weaver.app.prod) at 50M+ downloads, rated Teen, with ads and in-app purchases.

What it costs, and the gems trap

Talkie's gacha economy: subscription tiers plus draining gems currency
Talkie's gacha economy: subscription tiers plus draining gems currency

The money model is gacha, not a clean subscription. You draw character "cards," you spend "gems" that drain with use, and you top up to keep going.

On top of that sit Talkie+ at $9.99/month and Talkie+ Pro at $24.99/month (from the Talkie Lab listing, July 2026), with gem packs from $1.99 to $19.99 on iOS and Google Play items reaching $399.99. Translation: the headline sub is cheap, the gem drain is where the real spend lives. Price it out with the rest of the field in pricing compared.

The content policy: no NSFW mode, real bans

There is no official NSFW mode, and moderation has teeth. A 2026 review was titled, almost verbatim, "Voice Is Great, But the Bans Are Real" (that page has since 410'd, which is its own kind of tell).

Talkie's own promotion. Note the character-collection framing; that is the gacha economy doing its work.

International Talkie is looser than the Chinese Xingye, but "looser than a Chinese-regulated app" is not the same as permissive, and users report account bans that wipe out characters and relationships they built.

If content freedom is your priority, Talkie is the wrong pick; a genuinely uncensored community platform is a different animal, and I compare the whole field in content policies compared. For pure character variety with a hard filter, Character.AI is the sibling comparison.

A gacha event. On Talkie the romance and the currency are the same system.

Here is a creator running into the moderation wall in real time, which tells you more than any policy page:

The stability record

Talkie has already vanished on US users once. It was pulled from the US App Store on December 17, 2024 (after roughly 3.8 million US downloads), with the company telling users it was "technical reasons"; it stayed on Google Play and returned to iOS in February 2025 rebranded as "Talkie Lab." That is the pattern to internalize: a platform that can disappear from your app store, ban your account, and re-tune its content rules is not a place to invest years of relationship or a big gem balance.

Features and verdict

On capability, Talkie is strong: character creation, a community feed, persistent memory, voice, and multimodal generation (Talkie Lab advertises MiniMax's own Text-01 model and DeepSeek-V3). The voice in particular is a genuine highlight and a reason people stay.

The verdict: Talkie is one of the best-feeling companion apps to use and one of the riskier ones to depend on. Enjoy the voice and the creation tools, keep your gem balance low, and treat any character as something the platform can take away, because it has the track record to prove it.
