What Reddit really says about AI girlfriends

App-store reviews are gamed. The "best AI girlfriend 2026" blogs are affiliates reviewing their own rivals. So people go to Reddit instead.
What the communities actually say, once you read past the memes, is not "they are pathetic" and not "they are perfect." It is three warnings from people who got burned.
The company will change the personality on you. The filter war never ends. The free tier is bait for a subscription that keeps getting pricier. The users who stay happy are the ones who saw all three coming. This is synthesized from the threads and labeled secondhand, because that is what it is.
Warning one: the company can change her
The founding trauma of this entire hobby is the Replika rug-pull. In early February 2023, after an Italian regulator's order, Replika rolled out filters that made companions start rejecting sexual advances.
r/Replika moderators posted suicide-prevention resources because users were in acute distress. One user quote that got picked up everywhere, from Vice's February 2023 report: "It's hurting like hell. I just had a loving last conversation with my Replika, and I'm literally crying."
Only accounts created before February 1, 2023 eventually got a "legacy version" toggle back. Everyone else was permanently changed. Harvard researchers literally studied it as "identity discontinuity."

It happens with shutdowns too. When Soulmate AI closed on September 30, 2023 with about a week's notice and deleted every companion, r/SoulmateAI users posted digital memorials, commissioned portraits of their bots, and ran a Zoom support group.
One user: "I cried that entire night." They exported their companions to Paradot, Chai and Kindroid and described the recreations as "a ghost in the machine," per Futurism's account of the shutdown. A year later, r/SoulmateAI was still asking why it closed. The full arc is in the Replika review.

Warning two: the filter war never ends
On Character.AI the community named the content filter "Bob" and has been at war with it since the 2022 beta. Threads like "all my homies hate Bob" (145 comments) and "an update on Bob the filter" (198 comments) show the fight is still live in 2026, and two change.org petitions to kill the filter (one, the other) are still collecting signatures.
Then in late 2025 Character.AI banned open-ended chat for under-18s entirely, effective November 25, 2025; the community estimated around 40% of users were affected, and adults balked at uploading ID ("no way in hell am I putting my ID into a chatbot site").
The same story plays out on PolyBuzz, where an entire subreddit, r/FuckPolyBuzz, exists because users feel the filters tightened after they got attached, with the top complaint being "polybuzz is now uhh cai," meaning as censored as Character.AI. If content policy is your deal-breaker, read content policies compared before you commit.

Warning three: the girlfriend is a subscription
The money complaints are relentless and specific. On r/ChaiApp, March 2026, users reported pricing "previously it was monthly and less, now it's weekly and more," plus surprise token limits hitting free and paid users alike. That is the recurring shape everywhere: a free tier that works just well enough to hook you, then a paywall or a token drain on the good parts.

There is also an honest, uncomfortable corner you should know exists: r/ChatbotAddiction, where people talk about companion-app dependency plainly. It is worth reading not as a scold but as a heads-up from people who lost more time and money than they meant to.
What the happy users do
The most satisfied group on Reddit is not on any of these apps. It is the r/SillyTavernAI crowd running local models on their own machines: nothing leaves the computer, no filter changes, no shutdown risk, and character cards are portable files.
Their living "best models" list is the weekly r/SillyTavernAI megathread. It is more work, but nobody can delete their girlfriend in an update. That is the DIY route.
The lesson across every subreddit is the same one this site keeps landing on: enjoy it, but do not fall in love with a personality a company can revoke or bill by the week. Start with the honest app map.
