Free AI girlfriend chatbots that hold a conversation

Plenty of free AI girlfriend chatbots exist. The number that actually hold a conversation, remember what you said two messages ago, and do not fall apart into repetition is much smaller. The spec that decides it is boring and never advertised: context window, how much of the conversation the bot can "see" at once.

For free conversation quality, Character.AI is the most coherent but the most filtered. Chai and SpicyChat are looser but throttle you into paying. Perchance is genuinely free but runs a small context window (around 6k tokens) that limits how long it stays consistent.

No free chatbot is coherent, unfiltered, and unlimited at once. Pick which two of those three matter to you.

Why context window matters

A chatbot's "memory" inside a single conversation is its context window. Bigger window, longer it stays consistent before it forgets your name and repeats itself. This is why the free tiers feel dumber: the throttle is often the context.

Perchance's community measured its window at around 6k tokens and asked for 15k to 20k. SpicyChat literally sells context as the upgrade: about 4K on the "True Supporter" tier, 8K on "I'm All In." When people say a free bot "got worse," this is usually what they mean.

Character.AI is the coherence benchmark, roughly 20 million monthly users on 18M+ bots, with genuinely good conversation. But the free tier now runs full-screen mid-chat ads, caps swipe regenerations, and queues you at peak, and it filters explicit content at generation time. Best free conversation, most rules.

Chai built its reputation as far more permissive than Character.AI, with minimal filtering. The 2026 catch: it added country-based tiers restricting free access (citing "electricity and infrastructure costs") and hit free and paid users with unannounced token limits, while billing moved from monthly to weekly and more expensive. Loose, but the free lane is narrowing.

SpicyChat (NextDay AI, Montreal) is the uncensored community-character option, with a large user-made library. The free tier works but throttles you with queue waits, which is the conversion lever, and it sells context window by tier.

Perchance is the only genuinely free-and-unlimited one, no account, no caps. The tradeoff is that small context window and an anonymous operator with no support.

PolyBuzz (Cloud Whale) offers a free tier on a 20-million-character library, but it is ad-heavy and has quietly tightened filters over time, to the point that a whole r/FuckPolyBuzz subreddit exists to complain "polybuzz is now uhh cai."

A character persona of the PolyBuzz type. The free tier opens a huge library, but it leans ad-heavy and its content filters have tightened over time, so the looser reputation is not permanent.

How to test a chatbot's memory yourself

Ten-minute test, works on any of them:

  1. Early on, tell it three specific facts (your dog's name, your job, a plan for the weekend).
  2. Talk about other things for a while.
  3. Ask it something that requires one of those facts.

If it remembers, the context is holding. If it invents a new answer, you have found the free-tier ceiling, and no amount of good writing fixes it.

The picks

  • Best free conversation, accept the filter: Character.AI.
  • Looser, but the free lane is shrinking: Chai or SpicyChat.
  • Actually free and unlimited, accept the shorter memory: Perchance.
