Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator: what it is

The Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator is the game that made a lot of people realize an LLM could be a character you argue with, not a chatbot you query. It went viral in 2023, people are still looking it up, and almost nobody explaining it mentions the one thing you need to know first: it does not come with an AI. You bring your own.

It is a free escape-room game. The "girlfriend," a clingy catgirl holding you captive at the end of the world, is powered by a large language model, and you have to talk, charm, or trick her into letting you out. The download is free, but you plug in your own OpenAI API key and pay OpenAI per token as you play. If that friction is a dealbreaker, its paid successor AI2U is $14.99 with no key required.

What the game actually is

The full title on itch.io is a mouthful: "Yandere AI Girlfriend Simulator ~ With You Til The End," powered by ChatGPT. The setup is an escape room.

She (a catgirl) is holding you at the end of the world and does not want to let you leave, ever. Your job is to get out, which means actually persuading a language model through conversation.

It supports microphone input, and the pitch is that "you can discuss any topics you want with her," so no two escape attempts play the same. The creators are credited on itch as DGSpitzer, vivyhasadream, and AlterStaff.

The catch: you pay OpenAI, not the dev

This is the part that trips people up. The itch download is name-your-own-price, so free is an option, and it runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. But the game requires your own OpenAI ChatGPT API key, plus an optional Azure Speech key if you want voice.

The trailer. The joke the whole game runs on is that the AI is the threat, not the girlfriend.

So "free game" really means "free game plus your own pay-per-token API bill." For a short session that bill is small, but it is a real account you have to create, and it is the reason a lot of first-timers bounce.

The community reception reflects a real but rough game: 3.8/5 from 285 ratings at version 1.06, with comments going back to at least June 2023 and the viral moment widely dated to March 2023. It is a clever tech demo that became a genre, not a polished product.

The developer's own promo. Worth remembering the model bill lands on you, not on them.

Why it trends

A few things stacked up. It was one of the first games where the girlfriend character was a genuine LLM you could argue with. The "yandere" (obsessively, dangerously loving) framing is inherently viral. And letting streamers try to talk their way out on camera made great content.

Creators like Greenskull and GoodKhaos put up playthroughs, and the escape-room-versus-a-clingy-AI premise does the marketing by itself. Here is one of those creator run-throughs, which is the fastest way to see why it caught on:

It is culture-adjacent to the whole "AI girlfriend" wave, which is why it keeps resurfacing in search.

The paid successor: AI2U

If the API-key requirement is too much friction, the same team built the commercial version. AI2U: With You 'Til The End, from AlterStaff (with Neverland Entertainment), has been in Steam Early Access since January 23, 2025, priced at $14.99, sitting at 1,626 recommendations. Crucially, it dropped the bring-your-own-API-key model for a single purchase. Critical reception is mixed (Anime News Network graded it a D for being repetitive, TapTap's community likes it more), but it is the "pay once, no setup" version of the idea.

Is it worth your evening?

  • You are curious and technical, and do not mind an API key: grab the free itch version. It is a genuinely novel toy.
  • You want the concept without the setup: AI2U at $14.99.
  • You actually want a girlfriend, not a puzzle: this is the wrong product entirely. A game ends; go read AI girlfriend simulators and games for the app-versus-game split, and the honest app map for open-ended companions.

If it is the free-adult-game lane you are actually browsing, the other title that owns that search is covered in My Dystopian Robot Girlfriend, explained, and be warned: despite its name, that one has no AI at all.
