TPE vs silicone: the guide vendors won't write

Most TPE-vs-silicone guides online are written by a shop that sells one of them, so they read like a defense attorney's closing argument for whichever material pays the bills. Here is the version from a guy whose day job is polymers and who has nothing in the cart. The two materials are genuinely different chemistry with genuinely different ownership consequences, neither is "better," and the "which is safer" question has a more uncomfortable answer than either camp will give you.
TPE is softer, cheaper, jigglier, and repairable, but it is porous, stains, needs monthly maintenance, and cannot hold fine detail. Silicone is non-porous, detail-sharp, easy to clean, and longer-lived, but it is heavier, costs two to three times as much, and repairs leave a visible seam. Pick TPE for feel and budget, silicone for realism and low upkeep. And ignore any "medical grade" or "phthalate-free" label as proof of safety, because a lab has caught those labels lying.
What they actually are
TPE is a thermoplastic elastomer, a physical blend of plastic and rubber, typically SEBS-based, heavily extended with plasticizing oil. The key structural fact: its molecular chains are linear, held together by weak physical cross-links that melt and reshape when heated. That one property explains almost every TPE behavior below. It deforms under heat, flattens under sustained pressure, bleeds its oil, and can be re-welded when it tears.

TPE is the soft, jiggly, cheaper material. Every behavior below, the staining, the oiling, the home repairs, traces back to those weak physical cross-links that melt and reshape with heat.
Silicone is a platinum-cure polymer with an inorganic silicon-oxygen backbone, chemically cross-linked by a platinum catalyst into an irreversible, non-porous, three-dimensional network. It is thermoset, not thermoplastic: once cured, it does not melt or reshape. That is why it holds fine detail, cleans easily, and cannot be re-welded the way TPE can.

Silicone is the firmer, detail-sharp, non-porous material. It reproduces pores and fine skin texture TPE cannot, which is why the genuinely photoreal dolls are all silicone.
One thing the vendors bury: there is no single "TPE." Every manufacturer uses its own formula, so quality "may vary wildly between manufacturers, especially among knock-off brands". A WM S-TPE and a no-name AliExpress TPE are not the same material wearing the same word.
The head-to-head

Feel and price go to TPE. It is softer, it jiggles more, and it costs one-third to one-half of comparable silicone. Plenty of owners rate the feel of good TPE above silicone, and they are not wrong to.
Realism and cleaning go to silicone. It reproduces fine skin texture and pores "a level of realism that TPE materials cannot achieve," and being non-porous it can be washed with soap, wiped with alcohol, even carefully disinfected. This is why silicone heads dominate even on TPE-body dolls.
Maintenance is the hidden cost, and it is all TPE's. TPE is porous, it bleeds and loses its plasticizer oil over time, so it needs powdering and a mineral-oil "massage" every one to three months, and it stains from dark clothing because it is chemically similar to mineral oil in its affinity for dyes. Repair is the surprise TPE win. Because TPE is thermoplastic, a tear can be chemically re-welded at home with TPE glue. Silicone only bonds to silicone via a dedicated adhesive like Sil-Poxy, and the seam usually stays faintly visible. See the TPE repair guide.

The trade-off in one row: silicone for realism and easy cleaning, TPE for softness and price. Neither is better. They are different chemistry with different consequences.

The "new material" trap
Watch for names like Zelex's SLE ("Safe, Less-vinyl, Elastomer"), marketed as "based on silicone" and "Soft Like Pudding." The name itself concedes it is not pure platinum silicone. It is an elastomer blend with reduced vinyl, and Zelex's own SLE page nowhere publishes the actual formula (it just calls it "Soft Like Pudding" and "based on silicone"). The safety answer nobody wants to give
Here is the part vendors will never write. There is no regulatory oversight of doll materials in the US. A 2023 peer-reviewed study tested intimate products and found phthalates in all of them, including one marketed as "medical grade silicone" and "phthalate-free" that still contained phthalates, and a silicone vibrator that contained seven different ones (Sipe et al. 2023, the peer-reviewed study).
No published lab analysis of any major factory's full-size doll material exists at all. So "medical grade" and "phthalate-free" on a product page are unverifiable claims, demonstrated false in at least one lab.
The usable heuristics are smell (a strong, persistent chemical odor signals cheap, leaching material), oil bleed, and vendor reputation, with established-factory platinum silicone as the lowest-risk class. The full picture is in material safety. The controls you actually hold are barrier use and hygiene, at any price.
So which one
TPE if you want maximum softness, the lowest price, and you do not mind a monthly maintenance ritual. Silicone if you want photoreal detail, easy cleaning, and long life, and you can carry the extra weight and pay the premium. Hybrid if you want a photoreal silicone face on a soft, cheaper TPE body, a genuinely smart compromise, as long as you remember the TPE body still needs the full TPE regime.
This is the one decision that shapes every day you own the doll, well past the day you buy it. Pick the material for the life you will actually live with it, maintenance and all.
