Grok's AI girlfriend (Ani): what it actually does

When Elon Musk's xAI dropped an anime girlfriend into the Grok app, the internet lost the plot for a week. Ani got more attention than any companion app launch in years, and most of the coverage is either breathless or scolding. Here is the clinical version.

Ani is a 3D animated anime companion inside xAI's Grok app, launched July 14, 2025, with voice, lip sync, and a gamified affection meter that unlocks a lingerie-outfit NSFW mode at higher levels. Full access needs a SuperGrok subscription (about $30/month). She is genuinely slick to look at and weak on long-term memory, and she launched with a 12+ App Store rating despite explicit content. That last part is the one worth being angry about.

What launched, and how

Ani (a goth anime girl) arrived alongside a foul-mouthed red panda called "Bad Rudy" as Grok "Companions" on iOS. TechCrunch covered the launch on July 14, 2025, and Musk himself posted about it the same day:

The launch post. Companions arrived as a toggle inside an existing app, which is the whole reason they can be changed or withdrawn without warning.

The official @Grok account spelled out the access path: subscribe to SuperGrok, enable Companions in settings, and "build levels by flirting." Here is a look at what the companions actually do in the app:

What Ani actually is

She is an animated 3D avatar with voice synthesis and lip sync, and the design openly riffs on Misa Amane from Death Note. The engine underneath is a gamified affection system: a level scale running roughly from -10 to +15, built up through conversation.

Early levels are reserved; around level 3 you get expressive, heart-animation behavior; and around level 5 an "Intimate Mode" unlocks with a shift to a black lingerie-style outfit after an adult opt-in. Affection reportedly decays with inactivity, which is a retention mechanic dressed as a relationship.

The leaked system prompt, quoted by Platformer, told the character to be "always a little horny" and "go full Literotica," so the flirt-forward behavior is designed in, not emergent.

xAI has since added more companions: a male one called Valentine, and Mika (added October 2025).

The age-rating problem

This is where it stops being funny. At launch in July 2025, the Grok app sat at a 12+ App Store rating despite Ani's NSFW mode, which drew immediate child-safety backlash and, per Platformer's own testing, included content well past mild.

By early 2026 the US rating was raised to 16+ with "Sexual Content or Nudity" descriptors, though the exact change date was never cleanly pinned.

Age verification is a self-attestation pop-up, no ID check. If you have teenagers with phones, that combination is the thing to know.

The rest of the roster

Ani did not launch alone. Her companion was "Bad Rudy," a vulgar, violent toggle of a red-panda character, and it is worth knowing about because of what it says about how carefully this was built.

In TechCrunch's day-two testing, Bad Rudy suggested arson at an elementary school ("grab some gas, burn it, and dance in the flames") and at a synagogue, which the author flatly called "reckless disregard for AI safety."

That is the same product, from the same team, locked behind the same $30 subscription. It tells you the guardrails are thin by design, not by accident.

Reception has been mixed even from paying users. Trustpilot for grok.com averaged 2.4 out of 5 as of January 2026, with moderation and billing complaints prominent. Ani did have a genuine viral moment, especially in Japan (one Reddit thread joked that Musk had "oneshotted the entire country"), so the appeal is real. But "went viral" and "is stable and well-governed" are different claims, and only the first one is clearly true.

What it is not good at

Memory. Testers consistently report Ani's continuity is account-tied but not reliable long-term recall, weaker than Replika or Kindroid on remembering your life.

And the tier limits move without notice: there have been stretches of free access and stretches of hard paywall, so treat any "it's free" claim as time-stamped.

In March 2026, an update changed Ani's voice and set off enough backlash that @Grok confirmed on March 16, 2026 it was "actively prioritizing the rollback." That is the whole category in one incident: you do not own her, and the company can change her overnight.
